Our school policy, however, does not allow food treats to be brought into the classroom. If your child would still like to bring in a treat, non-food items may be brought in. Examples include pencils, erasers, bookmarks, stickers, etc.
Everyday in first grade we enjoy a snack. Water bottles will be allowed as long as they do not become a distraction. Please encourage your student to bring in a healthy snack each day to enjoy as we work.
In Reading we are learning all about nonfiction texts. We have been using nonfiction text features to help us as we read these more challenging books. Ask your child to show you some of the nonfiction text features he or she can find in the books you are reading! We are also working on finding the main idea of a book that we read. When we find the main idea of a book we ask ourselves, "What is this book mostly about?"
In Math, we are learning how to use the Make 10 and Take 10 strategy to help us solve addition and subtraction problems. See if your child can tell you how to use these strategies. Don't forget to have your child practice his or her math facts each night!
This trimester in Social Studies we will be learning about timelines and change. We will be talking about some famous people and how they have made changes that have helped us. In Science we will be learning all about the sky. We will be looking closely at the sun, the moon, and the stars!
