Weekly Newsletter- November 16th

  • Conferences are next week on Monday and Tuesday.  Reminder slips are in your child’s Friday Folder this week.  Fifth grade students are invited to attend this conference. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress in fifth grade.

  • No School Tuesday. Nov. 20- Friday, Nov. 23rd.  School resumes on Monday, November 26th. Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Students will have an open book social studies test on Monday.  This assessment will cover chapter 2- How American Indians adapted to different environments in North America.

  • Please take time to review your child’s narrative writing file in the Friday Folder this week.  Included in the file are the following: student reflection on writing growth, on demand narrative from August, on demand narrative from November, and the unit narrative. This does not have to come back to school.  I am so proud of the students- they really improved in writing over the course of the trimester, and many set goals to continue to work on specific areas.

  • There are also a handful of reading assessments in the Friday Folder.  We took time in class to review these this week. Students did an outstanding job understanding point of view.  We will continue to work on citing and explaining relevant evidence to support our ideas and identifying and explaining the theme(s) of a fictional piece throughout the course of the year.  Standards RL.5.1 and RL.5.2 are challenging fifth grade standards, but everyone is making good progress.

  • Next week (Nov. 19th only ) patrol week A will be on duty, and the following week (Nov. 26-30) will be patrol week B.

Standards Based Report Cards

As you anticipate your child’s first standards based report card this year, remember that student growth will be reported on a 4-point scale.  A “3” is the expected target and means that a student is demonstrating that standard with consistency and independence.  Some of the reporting standards are “year-long” and instruction related to that standard will continue throughout the entire school year.  For those year-long standards, it is perfectly appropriate for a student not to demonstrate proficiency (a “3”) in the first Trimester.

Report Cards will not be coming home in paper form this year. Your child’s report card will be available for viewing after 3:00 PM on Friday, November 16.  You will be able to print your child’s report card if you choose to, and your child’s teacher will have a printed copy available during conferences.  If you do not have access to a computer, please contact the office and a report card will be printed for you.

Below you will find the instructions to retrieve your student(s) report cards:
